Automatic updating cross references in word

Hello Community, I am developing a technical manual and I want to do that with Word 2010.

I started with a trial and now I am stuck with as follows: I used multilevel numbering which works fine.

You can create a cross-reference to any of the following objects: When a cross-reference is created, a field is inserted into your document identifying the item you are referencing (e.g. In the example (See Table A), you would type the brackets and the word See before inserting Table A as a field, as explained below.

The tooltip for Cross References (Word 2007 - Ribbon, References) says that Cross References get automatically updated if the content is moved to another location, but this does not happen.

I create a Cross Reference in document with Multi-level numbering.

Now I want to insert a text to refer to a numbered item.

This can be done with the "cross reference" function. A Description" and afterwards change the numbering for any reason the cross reference is NOT updated automatically - I have to right click it and than choose "Update Field".

Available headings, captions or footnotes will appear. Click Insert Note: In the example below, we selected the following options: Reference type: Table Insert reference to: Entire Caption (highlighted in grey) When a cross-reference is created, a field is inserted into your document identifying the item you are referencing (e.g. In the example (See Table A), you would type the brackets and the word See before inserting Table A as a field, as explained below.
